ec2-23-23-148-47.compute-1.amazonaws.com -
The end of the Rick Barnes era at Texas is in sight, and it’s a cruel reality.

Winning is how coaches are judged, and Barnes deserves a kind jury. He made the NCAA tournament in his first 14 seasons at Texas, a streak that ended in 2013. He has won. Consistently.

The perception of Barnes as a coach has not always lined up with the results. I’ve written about that before.

But the defense is about to rest. It might be a lost cause at this point.

Since the Longhorns finished their 16-18 season, they have had three players transfer and another, Myck Kabongo, declare for the NBA draft. That’s the program’s three leading scorers and a rotation big man. Gone.

Then athletic director DeLoss Dodds, always a supporter of Barnes, told the Austin American-Statesman this:

If I said I was not concerned, that would not be accurate. I am concerned. I am troubled by it, and we need to get it fixed.

Win, and win quickly. That’s the message of any AD who has to come out in the local paper in defense of his high-profile coach.

Well, that’s going to be an issue.

In the past, Barnes has been able to reload as quickly as a Texas gunslinger. Since 2006, Texas has had 11 players drafted in the NBA. Only Kentucky, North Carolina and Kansas have had more in that same time span. Nine of those players left school early. A 10th Longhorn, J’Covan Brown, left after his junior year in 2012 and went undrafted.

Talent leaves. Talent comes in. That’s how Barnes kept racking up the NCAA tourney bids.

But last season without Brown as a senior and after the NCAA decided to punish Kabongo with an unnecessary suspension that stretched into mid-February, the task was impossible. Barnes had the youngest team in college basketball—he played all freshmen and sophomores—and the only true NBA prospect was showing up to games in a suit.

Barnes had a laundry list of excuses he could give for only the second losing season in his career. Everyone should get a mulligan.

But next season will count, and it’s not looking promising.

The Barnes detractors can argue that he has lost his touch in recruiting. The Horns had opportunity to sell to the 2013 class, and what they came up with was a class whose top player is ranked 105th by Rivals.com.

The state of Texas produced 11 players in Rivals.com’s top 150. Barnes landed one of the 11.

Barnes has not always depended exclusively on local talent. He has had a national presence on the recruiting scene, but Kabongo is the only high-profile recruit from outside of the state he’s recruited in his last three classes.

Those classes were good enough to tread water until Barnes could land another big-time recruit or two. Had Sheldon McClellan, Julien Lewis, Jaylen Bond and Kabongo stuck around, Barnes would have had a roster that could have competed in the top half of the Big 12.

What’s left is a roster without stars or experience. Jonathan Holmes is the only player left from the 2011 class of six, and he’ll be the only upperclassman in the rotation next year.

Barnes’ PR campaign that has followed the departures—listen to the video below for a sample—is that the bad seeds are gone now. What’s left are guys who really care about the program. That’s nice and all, but what Barnes has won with is great talent.

When he arrived at Texas, Barnes coached a team of seven scholarship players to a Big 12 title in his first season. That kind of better-than-expected season in 2013-14 could buy him more time. Or, Barnes will have to dust off his recruiting game and score big with the 2014 class to give a fanbase that has turned apathetic something to be excited about.

The clock is ticking.

Read more Texas Longhorns Basketball news on BleacherReport.com

network.yardbarker.com - Things haven't exactly gone Vince Young's way since leading the Texas Longhorns to the BCS title in 2006. The former third overall pick has seemingly had trouble follow him since then, but on Friday some good news finally came his way as he was awarded his college degree in Youth and Community Studies."This will rank No. 1 because it is what I came to school for," Young told CBSSports.com. I came here to get an education, and to win a national championship. And now, I get to put that smile on my mom's face."Young's professional career got off to a promising start after he won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award and was even named to the Pro Bowl. However, a series of bad financial decisions and off-the-field incidents eventually derailed Young's playings days as a member of the Tennessee Titans. The Titans released him in 2010 before Young spent short stints with the likes of the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles.
The Texas softball team swept its way through the Austin regional last weekend to earn a spot in this weekend's super-regional round. The Florida State Seminoles provide the last stumbling block between the Longhorns and an appearance in the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City. Getting to OKC would be sweet for lots of reasons, of course; but perhaps the best is that it would (likely) provide UT with a very special opportunity: the hated Oklahoma Sooners are the national number one seed and favorites to win the whole thing, so if Texas can get past FSU the Lady Longhorns would have a chance to march into OU territory and swipe the dream right out from under the Sooners.

But, first thing's first. Florida State made its way to Austin by pulling an upset last weekend, traveling to Mobile and knocking out the host University of South Alabama in dramatic fashion. They took out USA in the teams' second game of the tournament, but the Jaguars fought back through the losers' bracket to force a rematch--Florida State needed to win once, whereas South Alabama had to beat FSU twice to advance. In the first game, the hosts won a pitcher's duel 3-0 to set up a winner-take-all championship game.

South Alabama continued to look strong in that second game, putting up a six-spot in the bottom of the second and maintaining control the remainder of the contest. The Lady 'Noles entered the seventh (and final) inning trailing by a score of 6-1. With two outs and a runner on second base, the score was still 6-1. So, just to recap: down by 5, one out away from having their season ended. Sophomore Bailey Schinella then drew a walk, followed by an infield single by freshman Alex Kossoff. An errant throw on the infield hit scored a run, cutting the Jaguar lead to 6-2. Another freshman, Katlin Allen, drew a full-count walk to load the bases for junior slugger Kelly Hensley, who proceeded to absolutely mash a grand slam off the scoreboard behind the left field fence. The stunned Jaguars couldn't score in the bottom of the seventh, and freshman Victoria East completed the comeback with a game-winning solo shot in the top of the eighth.

On paper, Texas must be considered the favorites this weekend. The Seminoles certainly have two strong pitchers in Lacey Waldrop (1.50 ERA, .188 opp BA, 210 innings) and Monica Perry (1.95, .190, 161.2), but their fielding is suspect: FSU's opponents have scored 344 runs, but only 276 of them have been earned. If the Longhorns can put the ball in play and put pressure on the Seminole defense, they should be able to score some runs. Plus, even as good as Waldrop and Perry are, it doesn't appear that there is a pitcher in college softball who can handle Texas' Terrific Taylors; Taylor Hoagland is now hitting .444 and slugging .874, while Taylor Thom is hitting .392 and just set a Texas postseason record with six RBI against South Carolina on Sunday, including a grand slam. And it must be noted that Texas' top two pitchers have numbers even more impressive than Florda State's: Blaire Luna sports a 1.17 ERA and opponents hit only .129 against her in 215.2 innings of work, while Kim Bruins (1.57, .196, 76) is not too far behind. Oh, and Bruins can also hit; when she's not pitching, she's hitting .333 as the team's first baseman.

This Texas team is strong, balanced, and poised to make a run to Oklahoma City. But if last week's events in Mobile teach us anything, it's that you're foolish if you think you have Florida State beaten before you've gotten the final out. This should be a great series.

Tonight's first pitch is at 8:00 PM. Game Two is tomorrow at 2:00 PM, with Game Three to follow if necessary at 5:00. All three games will be broadcast on ESPNU and online at WatchESPN, and if you live in Austin there are apparently still a very few tickets available. This will be your open thread. Hook 'em!

bleacherreport.com -
When you fall off your horse—the saying goes—you are supposed to get back on. That is exactly what the Texas Longhorns have done over the course of the past two seasons.

When the Longhorns dropped five of their last six contests to finish 2010 with a 5-7 record, it marked a historic stumble for a program that had made its second national championship appearance in five seasons.

Mack Brown was adamant about restoring what was once an elite program, and the results are beginning to show themselves after two years of marginal improvement—although the 2013 season figures to be the payout campaign filled with high expectations and media attention.

But behind all of that hype and rhetoric is the foundation of a team that arguably is ready for a special year.

The 2011 recruiting class—a group that includes quarterback David Ash and running backs Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron—has had a number of players emerge to become a core, and it just might have enough working pieces to make something happen.

The ‘Horns locked up 22 commitments in their 2011 haul, and 14 of them figure to contribute in some fashion this season. If Texas is able to bring home some hardware this season, these juniors and redshirt sophomores will have huge roles in doing so.

Offensively, the 2011 class has fingerprints all over.

David Ash is going into his junior season with a wealth of experience. His physical abilities have helped him tremendously in the past, and now he will have to conquer the mental tasks of running an up-tempo offense.

Running backs Brown and Bergeron are both three-year contributors like Ash and are two-thirds of a trio of backs that can challenge any backfield in the country from a talent standpoint. Is this the year that the production catches up with the talent?

Jaxon Shipley is a fixture at wide receiver, one of two reliable options (Mike Davis). Shipley saw his numbers increase in virtually every category from his freshman to his sophomore season, and similar improvements will be the standard for the junior receiver.

The Longhorns have not had success at tight end, but M.J. McFarland definitely gives them a reason to be hopeful. After redshirting his freshman year in 2011, McFarland caught eight passes for 125 yards and a touchdown in 12 games in 2012. Blessed with great athleticism, McFarland could flourish in a spread offense.

Josh Cochran has made the most noise up front, having seen significant time at left and right tackle since arriving as a freshman. Two years later, Cochran has become a reliable contributor outside, and his efforts cannot be understated during a 2011 season that really called for help on the offensive line.

Defensively, the 2011 class delivered, although there is still much to expect from the group.

Desmond Jackson has become a solid fixture in the defensive tackle rotation—with 25 games under his belt—and is one candidate for a huge 2013 season.

Cedric Reed is the favorite to come out of summer with the starting defensive end spot opposite Jackson Jeffcoat. Reed’s development has been a steady climb, but after a standout sophomore season, Reed is firmly in the spotlight on the defensive line.

Linebackers Steve Edmond and Kendall Thompson saw big minutes last season, and their inexperience got the better of them more often than not. Nevertheless, the two of them are significant pieces to the puzzle on defense.

Quandre Diggs is the obvious name drop, and his production speaks volumes over the course of his two seasons. Entering his junior season, Diggs is expected to slide into the nickelback position, taking over where Kenny Vaccaro left off.

The last three all play in the secondary as up-and-comers who flashed some brilliance last season and are expected to serve big roles in the defensive backfield.

Sheroid Evans has emerged as a legitimate option at cornerback, allowing Diggs’ move to the nickel and some safety. Mykkele Thompson and Josh Turner have come along nicely as well and have made enough plays in the past to warrant a place in the rotation. While players like Adrian Phillips and Carrington Byndom have the seniority, Thompson and Turner have not been without their standout plays.

Ultimately, Texas’ 2011 recruiting class has produced solid pieces at virtually every position. The Longhorns were one of the youngest teams a season ago, but with all of these third-year players gaining valuable experience early on, the foundation is a huge reason why they are one of the favorites to win the Big 12.

Read more Texas Longhorns Football news on BleacherReport.com

I don't know the answer to this question but I think it is important to pose it. I watch the LHN occasionally and I have been on it once, but I still haven't formulated a fixed opinion, so I thought I would just open it up for conversation.

Unlike a majority of you, I actually get the Longhorn Network. The benefit is minimal. I am a student, so I can go to the football games that LHN airs, and I have no desire to watch middle of the week baseball or basketball games against small in state schools. Especially when we suck at sports.

Does the success of the athletic department directly correlate to the success of the network? The obvious answer would be yes. But that doesn't make the content any better. It reminds me of a World War Two German Propaganda machine, where they aren't actually allowed to report the news but are encouraged to spoon feed you bullshit until you slowly accept it for reality. Just watch this stupid interview where Rick Barnes trie to tell us that the program is as strong as ever.

Coddling these coaches with softball questions doesn't do it for me, so what kind of people is LHN targeting? Is there a demographic of people who only like the Longhorns, understand very little about sports, but can sit through an hour of golf highlights and subject themselves to interviews where coaches talk about nothing? Is Longhorn Network built around the Seinfeld model? I don't know. I do know that very few people get it, and of those people, very few people watch it.

It is also a really easy target for jokes. And the jokes are pretty hilarious, too. Look at this tweet from cuppycup, the genius GIF creator from Good Bull Hunting.

@longhornnetwork Shipleys reminds me of donuts and donuts remind me of LHN viewership.

— cuppycup (@cuppycup) May 23, 2013

It's not like these jokes aren't warranted. I will never stand up for my school when it is the butt of an LHN joke. It doesn't really help with recruiting, either. In theory, it should, but why would recruits want to come to Texas when we reallocate national televised content into a stream that, at best, a few hundred will see.

The talent is there. I was on a segment after the miracle comeback against OU in basketball. They asked students who left the game early to come in and be ridiculed. I wasn't actually at the game, but responded anyway, because I wanted to see the studio. What I first realized is that there is a real disconnect between the network and the university. They called and offered to have an intern to pick me up, but when I told them I was at Jester, neither the producer nor the intern knew what it was or how to get there. When I eventually walked all the way to the studio (located off of Red River by St. Davids Medical Center and I-35), I met the on air talent. They were unbelievably nice and friendly. Kevin Dunn was the guy I talked to the most. He is very sincere and genuine. His storied television history included a stop on the Real World in the late 90's and a short stop on the Onion's sports program "The Dome." Kaylee Hartung was the other anchor I met. She is a former CBS correspondent who worked very closely with Bob Scheiffer before landing her first anchoring job with LHN. They were all very nice and very talented, but their content is forced and because of that it will peak at limited success.

What appeals to me about the Longhorn Network is the material they produce about the school. For example, this awesome piece on the Longhorn Rodeo team.

Stories like this are both interesting and informative. They create a connection between the Network and the University. I don't get the same feeling watching the Longhorn Extra or the obnoxious "you write the questions you want to answer" interviews with the mens big three coaches.

So does the Longhorn Network suck? I don't know. I don't like it, but maybe it will get better. Probably not. But maybe.

Recently I witnessed the Iraqi Information Minister of LHN, aka Lowell Galindo, doing what I can only guess you could call curls with some chains and thought to myself, "wow, that has got to be the saddest commentary yet on the current state of UT Athletics."

But my fellow BON authors have told me that's far from the worst they've seen.

A.J. Hooper- I told some friends about the articles saying Texas has a shot at the Big 12 title. Their response? Everyone just laughed.

Sumedh- "I didn't know we won a national championship in 2005!" -- woman sitting next to Wescott and I at the open practices this Spring.

Curry- This morning when I found out that I was blocked by Coach Brown after tweeting him a question after the OU game about how much they practiced defense.

How about you?

So as we suffer through yet another insufferable off-season awaiting the start of what we pray will be a resurgent football season, why not give misery some more company with commentary, signs and other circumstantial evidence that UT Athletics truly has hit rock bottom.

When thinking about how much the prospects of the 2013 Texas Longhorns football team would have taken a blow had senior wide receiver Mike Davis carried through with his tentative intentions to declare for the NFL Draft, it's almost hard to believe how much of a question mark he was entering last season.

After a promising freshman season that saw him set a single-season freshman mark at Texas for receptions (47) and finish third in receiving yards (478), despite a knee injury that caused him to miss the Oklahoma game and limited him for the rest of the season while he took a beating on screens and other short passes in the Greg Davis offense, Davis regressed as a sophomore.

Well, perhaps it's tough to say that Davis regressed, because he did improve his per-catch average and gained 609 yards, while making only one fewer catch. He even started to show off his potential as a deep threat with five catches that went for 40 or more yards.

But it was clear that something was wrong, which head coach Mack Brown partly blamed on a hip flexor that slowed him for much of the reason.

More than that, though, it was something mental that held him back. Something mental that caused the lapses in concentration that led to far too many dropped catches and missed blocks.

His roommate at the time, the malcontent Darius White, was blamed as much of the problem, so it was a relief to many when White left after the 2011 season, taking his poor attitude and work ethic with him to Missouri.

There were transfer rumors surrounding Davis and he even admitted last fall that he was going through personal problems and suffering from distractions and other issues he didn't want to discuss publicly. It got so bad that he considered giving up the game and returning to his first love of basketball.

Fortunately for the 'Horns, the Skyline product decided that he wasn't a quitter, regained his focus and love for the game, and played with a passion. In the spring, he asked to have the word "Magic" added to the name of his jersey and said during that fall that he needed to "make magic plays" to live up to his name.

Going back even further, the 'Horns are lucky to have Davis at all. One of the few prospects spurned at the first 2009 Junior Day, Davis then committed to LSU shortly thereafter, but reached out to the Texas staff late in the process and ended up becoming a Longhorn two days after visiting for the team banquet. At the time, Davis was an important piece of the 2010 wide receiver group, but he was eventually eclipsed in stature in the class by the pledge of Darius White at the Under Armour game.

Now, Davis is the last receiver standing from that group, which also included Chris Jones, who transferred from the program without making a catch, and Darius Terrell, who moved to H-back and barely contributed more than Jones before leaving the program as well.

And returning to last fall, he lived up to his "magic" promise. Sure, there were the big plays in the passing game, but there was also a knockdown block to help spring Joe Bergeron for a touchdown against Baylor that really illustrated just how far he had come.

On the season, he finished as the team leader in receiving yards with 939 yards, second in receptions, led the team in receiving touchdowns, and averaged 16.5 yards per catch, a monstrous improvement over his per-catch numbers as a freshman.

As those per-catch numbers indicate, he emerged as an elite or at least near-elite deep threat, with nine catches that went for 35 yards or more and three over 60 yards, including a stretch against Texas Tech and Iowa State late in the season when he caught a 75-yard touchdown pass and a 61-yard touchdown catch.

Against Oklahoma State, he made one of the biggest catches of the season, and one of the biggest in recent Texas history, by elevating to pull in a pass over Justin Gilbert to set up the game-winning touchdown.

Other than the degree of difficulty, which was high with Gilbert trying to dislodge the football as Davis went to the ground, the most impressive element of the play was the fact that it came after he had dropped a sure-fire touchdown earlier in the game. Afterwards, Davis admitted that there would have only been a 50-50 chance he would have made the same play last season.

Instead, Davis went to Ash after the drop and told his quarterback that he would come through with a play if he had the ball thrown his direction again. Ash showed confidence in his wide receiver, delivered the ball on the money, and Davis came down with the catch.

The newfound level of trust in Davis extended to Case McCoy, as he checked into a go route for Davis late against Kansas and then found him racing down the sideline for a 39-yard gain that set up the final touchdown pass to DJ Grant to avoid what would have been the worst loss in Mack Brown's tenure at Texas, which is saying something after the 2010 season.

The only real cause for pessimism regards the last several games of the season. After the outbrusts against the Red Raiders and Cyclones, Davis wasn't nearly as much of a factor, failing to match his eventual yards per game average in each of the final three games. However, it's easy to somewhat disregard the TCU and Kansas State since Ash was injured for the former and out for the latter -- his replacement, Case McCoy, simply doesn't have the arm strength to push the ball deep down the field in the same way that Ash can.

Still, that doesn't explain the Alamo Bowl. A month of preparation may have made quite a bit of difference for Oregon State in terms of emphasizing ways to take away Davis deep, but the three catches for 30 yards still aren't good enough in that big of a game.

As a corollary to the less-than-impressive finish, the offensive changes will mean more two-deep looks against Texas and a lower likelihood of safeties crashing into the box to defend the run as they did last season, especially on the long catch against Texas Tech.

With the way that defenses approach the offense changing, how will that impact Davis' nearly-uncanny ability to get open deep on post routes?

He'll surely still have some opportunities and if they aren't there in the spread sets, the coaching staff has been adamant that they will still have the ability to run the ball with numbers and force, so perhaps the play-action pass out of heavy sets with Davis running post routes will still remain an important piece of the offense, though it seems hard to imagine that it won't at least decrease to a significant degree.

Now a more mature player willing to do what it takes in multiple facets of the game, including with his mental approach, Davis has a chance to become one of the better receivers in school history with a season that builds on his 2012 efforts. The offense probably won't make it as easy to get open deep, but it doesn't seem outrageous to expect that he could eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career in his last season in Austin.

And after all of his ups and downs at Texas, that would be an extremely impressive accomplishment. If it happens, just thank the magic for returning. And Magic for returning.

Happy Thursday, Longhorn fans. Thanks for bearing with us at BON as the dry summer months hit and the news slows down to an absolute trickle.

There is some good news today, however, as the countdown towards the season has hit a big landmark:

Countdown to Kickoff: 100 days! #HookEmHorns twitter.com/UT_MackBrown/s…

Tomorrow you'll wake up, happy that it's Friday and that a three-day weekend awaits, and you can think to yourself, "Not only is it Friday, but it's all the day that the countdown to Texas football hits single digits."

Yup, not a bad feeling.
