bleacherreport.com -
The summer of 2012 saw Penn State players like Silas Redd and Rob Bolden left the program to pursue success at other schools, after the sanctions were handed down. Now, after Bill O'Brien worked to galvanize the ship and his players responded, Penn State transfers are a lot more "normal" in the grand scheme of things.

Normal, of course, means kids looking to find a way onto the field after realizing it might not happen for them at their original choice.

Steven Bench, a quarterback at Penn State, elected to transfer after spring and recently, as the Tampa Bay Times reported, picked USF as a landing spot. Which is good for Bench, the former Rivals 3-star recruit, who walks into South Florida with an opportunity to compete for new head coach Willie Taggart.

It is also a good sign for Penn State.

Things in Happy Valley are stabilizing. We saw that during the season as Bill O'Brien's scrappy team fought their way to eight wins. We saw that during the 2013 recruiting cycle that, led by Christian Hackenberg, battled off the negative recruiting to put together a solid class.

For Penn State fans they are coming out of the transfer danger zone and landing back into the same waters of other teams. Sure, they will lose a homesick kid or two, and guys like Bench, who are looking to get on the field, will leave. But the program is back on the right track under Bill O'Brien.

O'Brien, who told Bench following spring ball that he would likely be only a backup at best, according to Penn Live's David Jones, is handling things well. The coach did not sugarcoat it with Bench, just like he did not sugarcoat it with fans and the media when it came to his career path or the medical care that he expects for his squad.

Penn State is in good hands with Bill O'Brien, and even as Bench finally lands, it speaks to the confidence the coach has in his quarterback depth and his straight-forward approach. In the case of Penn State, this transfer, rooted in playing time, is not a bad sign for the program.

Read more Penn State Football news on BleacherReport.com

network.yardbarker.com -
Last season it was putting the names of the players on the back of the jerseys at Penn State for the first time, a nod to those that stuck by the program in a rough time, now this year.... Oh oh, another change in the works?

It could well be as these are the replica jerseys on sale:

It appears as if the former biggest change on the face of the planet of PSU football - the white collar - could be gone, replaced with a collar of the same color and the Nittany Lion logo at the apex of the collar as well.

Should this be what the jerseys look like, well.... if you aren't a PSU fan, just sit back and enjoy the collective freak out in all its glory. There truly is never a dull moment in Happy Valley.

As you may or may not have seen by now, Lion's Pride is now selling a new style of Penn State football jerseys. Before you all start freaking out, it's just a tiny little change. And it's just the logo! No big deal! We like that logo, remember? Just be happy that we didn't go to something like this, or this, or this, or even this. There haven't even been any official announcements, so these may not even be our real uniforms. We could end up with these for all we know.

In the end, this is still our wonderful football team, and we're only 99 days away from seeing them play. Before you start flipping out in the comments section, donate to the Kickstarter. It's so easy, and it's right there! Plus you get free stuff if you do it, so win-win!

Will McGloin make the Raiders' roster? -chicken cosmo
A year ago the notion of Matt McGloin making an active NFL roster seemed beyond ridiculous. Even after a spectacular senior season, it still seems hard to believe since McGloin doesn't have the size and arm strength that NFL teams desire. If you examine the roster, it may be best not to doubt McGloin this time around. The Raiders recently acquired Matt Flynn, last year's free agent QB of the moment who didn't even start a game after being beat out by Russell Wilson. They used a fourth-round pick on Arkansas QB Tyler Wilson, who has reportedly been stellar so far in mini-camp. Those two are all but guaranteed a roster spot, leaving the third-string battle between McGloin and our good friend Terelle Pryor. If Pryor is moved to another position, as many believe he eventually will, McGloin may just inherit that third spot on the roster if he continues to impress Oakland's coaching staff. Even if Pryor wins out and remains at QB, McGloin could be a likely candidate for the practice squad to give the Raiders a year to develop him as a legitimate NFL quarterback.

What's scarier, an angry JoePa or an angry BO'B? -Success With Honor Always
This may be the greatest question question in the short history of the BSD Mailbag, and it's a tough one. I never had the pleasure of meeting JoePa, but have been in the same room and corresponded with Bill O'Brien. Let me tell you, that man just exudes intensity. Even when he's calmly chatting about football and discussing games that are still several months away, you get the feeling that at any moment he's going to stand up, rip his shirt off and throw a trident directly at your soul. I would hate to be anywhere in his proximity on a bad day. With that being said, an angry JoePa is still more frightening than about anything I can imagine. If you don't agree, go back and watch the end of the 2002 Iowa game when he chased the refs into the locker room. He had a look in his eyes that I've never quite seen before, and I'm pretty sure smoke came out of his ears at one point. Those refs barely made it safely into the locker room, and probably stayed locked inside for about two weeks before they felt safe enough to come outside.

Do you believe the man you love is overfeeding you and making you fat in order to control you? -WorldBFat
I thought it was due to all of the stuffed-crust pizzas, KFC and Krispie Kreme, but now that I think of it, it probably is "the man" trying to control me. Thank you WorldBFat for empowering me to take control. You're the next Tony Robbins. Or Tony Shaloub. Or one of my 17 Uncle Tonys.

If a tree falls and no one is around to hear it, does Ohio State still suck? -PSUbaltimore
Of course. Always and forever.

How is Gilliam doing, injury-wise and with his conversion from tight end to tackle? -NittanySeaLion
Gilliam was overshadowed by Kyle Carter, Jesse James and Matt Lehman last season as they played a larger role in the passing game. But Gilliam was a key part of the offense and really excelled as an extra lineman, for all intents and purposes. He has spent the offseason bulking up and is now hovering around 300 pounds. Gilliam may not be a starter this fall, but will see plenty of playing time and will be depended on as a leader. Gilliam has unfortunately had to battle a few injuries during his time at Penn State, but has always been known as a very high-character student-athlete.

Can I give you my phone number? -ReadingRambler
Sure, but I will also need your social security and credit card numbers, along with your date of birth.

Where do you draw the line between tasteful and tasteless nudity, and how does that relate to Casual Fridays at the office? -MainLion
If you got it, flaunt it. It's always better than being an amorphous blob of khaki.

Have you ever seen a grown man naked? Full_Derp
Yes. I almost always look down in the shower.

This is the last full regional profile. We'll start picking up the pace after this one, so that your eyes don't bleed.

Let's get it done.

#1 Jenn Brown, SO, Economics vs. #16 I'm Going Derp

It all started harmlessly. Asked about that year's State Patty's Day, Jenn Brown was cheerful, and simply trying to share some insights when she spoke to The Daily Collegian's Chris Bickel on March 1st, 2010. Frankly, Jenn didn't even provide the best quote from that season's State Patty's Day - shared by 06Lion in this fanshot, which no one read. Nevertheless, Jenn Brown's morally casual attitude immediately earned her a legion of followers on BSD, sight unseen. Different BSDers thought they discovered her Twitter account, and her Spacebook page. Three years later, alumna Jenn Brown - the real one, not the sideline reporter - remains like the fabled mountain yeti: sought by hundreds of dudes living in their parents' basements, still elusive, still without photographic evidence. Can Jenn Brown walk right past 16-seed I'm Going Derp in the HUB, wearing the same clothes she wore out last night? Of course. This won't even be a contest.

#8 Ham Sandwich vs. #9 Your [blank] Sounds Hot

You might think Ham Sandwich began with a talk about quarterbacks, or the offensive line. To be the best of my search capabilities, that doesn't appear to be the case. Ham Sandwich first made the 2-deep as the reserve tight end, behind Kevin Haplea, and ahead of Garry Gilliam, Andrew Szczerba, Nate Cadogan, and - that's right - true freshman Kyle Carter, last year's Big Ten Offensive Freshman of the Year. (True freshmen were (mostly) ineligible at PSU, until 2012).

And as freakishly talented as Ham Sandwich is, it will get a serious game out of 9-seed Your [blank] Sounds Hot. A quick search reveals 861 comments on BSD containing the exact words "sounds hot". That's eight hundred, sixty-one - nearly an entire Sandusky Trial Open Thread of nothing but 'your girlfriend/wife/sister/cousin/mother sounds hot' comments. I'm not clicking 'next' 90 times to find the first one, but I can tell you that the last one was posted just a few days ago, by No.21 in this thread - and it's still going green. That, my friends, is a deep, deep squad.

#5 SOA vs. #12 Hullstache

Stephen Obeng-Agyapong is rarely amused. As a freshman from out of state, SOA was unfamiliar with Lift for Life, and at one point, had raised $0 - until RUTS discovered him, and BSD adopted him, pushing SOA past his goal in about 20 hours (note to WeAre! editors: use frown photo to increase donations). SOA grew into a folk legend at BSD, though he wouldn't see the field for another two years (obligatory: SOA finds your lack of faith disturbing). In the interim, psuwxman (and Adam Shell) got SOA to crack a smile.

Hullstache.

Hullstache.

Hullstache.

#4 Poz / Mauti vs. #13 BBDS Defense

The Poz / Mauti debate isn't about who supports the run better, or who has better pass drops. It's hunkability. And though Mauti's passion stirred the emotions of a few BSDivas (and Dudes), Poz's catalog of shirtless photos probably carries the day. But has an official winner ever been crowned?

How did the Bend-But-Don't-Suck Defense land only a 13-seed? The selection committee works in strange ways. Maybe they noticed the drop in BBDS mentions. Maybe they saw the change in commentor tenor about BBDS pre-2009 Rose Bowl, and post-2009 Rose Bowl. No one can say for certain. But this much is clear - BBDS won't be getting many female votes in its opening round match, and that's something it will have to overcome if it wants to survive and advance.

#3 HOSS's vs. #14 Recruiting Starz

FACT: HOSS's is great food, if you like eating from a dumpster, or if your crack habit leaves you with only $4.57 for meals. We've debated the (lack of ) merits of this hog slop often. Like here. And here. And here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here. But the original debate? That started right about here. Now, you have to scroll 1/2 of the way down the page of a 750 comment thread (that began as a Nick Saban to PSU rumor), but you should stop as soon as you see OctaShields note that he "always saw Saban as more of a HOSS's guy" (than a Corner Room guy). 30,000 comments later, we still can't agree on a definition of "good".

Recruiting Starz is a 14-seed? The debate we hold each February thru August? Yep, and it's probably because the starz dudes began introducing math, throwing fancy pants terms like 'average', 'mean', and 'standard deviation' around, when there were individual examples of Graham Zug we could point to each year. They moved the goal posts on us via strawman. Personal attac - never mind. Wrong bracket.

#6 TWSS vs. #11 Arm Punts

There are (at the time of the writing) 713 comments on BSD with the exact phrase "TWSS". Impressive. Long. Hard to beat. Very hard.

But can TWSS beat this meme off the bracket? Or does Arm Punts show its stamina, proving it's ready for another round of fun?

#7 skins4ever vs. #10 Jorts

In February 2010, a commentor appeared from mythical CandyLand onto BSD. His handle? skins4ever. He penned a fanpost critical of Ed DeChellis. He was one year ahead of his time, apparently. The fanpost exploded into a 400+ comment free-for-all. Embarrassed, the youthful, pleasantly trollish skins4ever deleted the fanpost - but not before an enterprising BSDer, AdamShell, captured the entire thread and shared it for all future BSDers to enjoy. So, uh, enjoy. Wah? You need moar comment? Then have at it.

10-seed Jorts? 10-seed Jorts. But this isn't the run of the mill, standard interwebs jorts meme. It's the original BSD jorts, worn by our former fearless leader with pride, in a grotto somewhere in Texas. As JtotheP highlighted in the grottoes rundown, the original BSD jorts pic is lost to history. But there does exist an urban camouflage, cargo-short that hasn't yet been deleted. And that's still worth sharing.

#2 BSDivas vs. #15 Bert Bielema

¿quiénes son las BSDivas? That's just a pack of the hippest chicks on the interwebs. They run the BSD After Dark threads, the sexy olympic gif threads, and the bar threads. They're the organizers. They get the season tickets squared away. They do all the cooking around here. They win the Pick 'Em contests. They know more football than you do, which is how they get on the sidelines. Heck - they actually run this whole place. And, really, they sort of always have.

Winner by knockout, BSDivas.

Redshirt Freshman Austin Johnson came to PSU a versatile 3-star offensive line prospect with only a handful of other BCS offers. He's since switched to the defensive line, as what LJ Sr wants, LJ Sr gets.

Johnson's on the short list to see significant playing time at the nose tackle position this fall, one of a few youngsters vying to fill the void that rookie Seattle Seahawk DT Jordan Hill has left. He had a good spring and great spring game, notching two sacks.

Hailing from New Jersey, Johnson also played basketball in high school, leading his team to a state title. He hails from the same high school as former Nittany Lion and current Raider Jack Crawford.

network.yardbarker.com - In-state rivals Penn State and Pittsburgh are facing off again - on the basketball court.

The Pennsylvania programs will be pitted against each other in this year's Big Ten-ACC Challenge. The Nittany Lions will visit the Panthers on Dec. 3.

Penn State and Pitt last met in 2005, when the Panthers won 94-51 in Pittsburgh.

Pitt, which is moving from the Big East to the ACC next season, leads the all-time series with Penn State 76-68.

The schools are also renewing their longtime football rivalry for a four-year series starting in 2016.

network.yardbarker.com - Penn State has 67 scholarship players on its football roster and coach Bill O'Brien sees no reason why that will change significantly by the time the season starts Aug. 31.

O'Brien said Wednesday he doesn't expect a second wave of departures from the Nittany Lions, even though NCAA sanctions still allow his players to transfer without sitting out a season.

Ten players transferred out of Penn State after the NCAA handed down severe sanctions last summer in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal. O'Brien was forced to prepare for his first preseason practice with uncertainty over who would show up for training camp.

Players can still leave without penalty until the 2013 season starts, but O'Brien said he has not spent any time this offseason re-recruiting his guys.

''I don't see the mass exodus coming,'' O'Brien said before speaking to a banquet hall full of Penn State supporters in midtown Manhattan. ''We're going to coach who shows up July

network.yardbarker.com - Penn State will play the role of visitor for the first Big Ten conference game in the history of Rutgers football. The 2014 Big Ten conference schedule was released Thursday afternoon, setting the stage for the 2014 season which introduces Rutgers and Maryland as new conference members. Maryland will return to Beaver Stadium in 2014 with a game on November 1.

With the new division layout, Penn State's Land Grant Trophy series with Michigan State will return to the back-end of the regular season schedule. When Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1993, Michigan State had been the regularly schedule opponent for the final week of the season every year until 2011, when the conference expanded to 12 members with Nebraska and split in to two divisions. The Spartans had been placed in the Legends Division and Penn State in the Leaders Division. Penn State's regular season finale opponent had been Wisconsin during this brief stretch.

network.yardbarker.com - Penn State has been quickly moving up the ranks for the recruiting class of 2014, recently moving past Auburn and Alabama for the No. 14 overall spot (247Sports).

This is largely due to the Nittany Lions’ latest addition of Marcus Allen, who gave his verbal commitment to coach Bill O’Brien last Friday morning.

“He basically told me he was tired of the whole recruiting process,” said DaLawn Parrish, Allen’s high school coach. “He had looked around and narrowed it down. He knew what he wanted in a program. He thought he found that at Penn State.”

Allen, a four-star prospect at the safety position and No. 5 recruit from the state of Maryland, had racked up over 30 football scholarships before making his decision. This included offers from Michigan State, Wisconsin, Clemson and Stanford, among others.

“It’s hard to find a 6-foot-2, 190-pound kid that can run and hit,” Parrish said. “He still has room to grow, and he can play multiple positions. When you find someone like tha...

network.yardbarker.com - Before you continue reading, please keep this disclaimer in mind. In no way is this the start of a rumor or citing obscure anonymous sources. This is pure speculation and hypothetical thinking on my part. Now that I have cleared that up with you, let's continue.

Penn State's 2014 Big Ten conference schedule was released earlier today. As you have probably seen by now, Penn State has one schedule hole to fill next season and the available weeks to work with are not exactly the most friendly. Penn State has two open weeks in October and another in November to work with. So, how will one of those games be filled? Who fills it?

After a quick look at some future schedules out there, my early money is on Syracuse.

As I explained on Examiner, Syracuse has just one non-conference game currently scheduled for 2014 (Notre Dame in MetLife Stadium). The ACC will also stick to an eight-game conference schedule so that leaves Syracuse with three non-conference games to fill....
