network.yardbarker.com - Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops says one of his graduate assistants and a strength coach had their homes destroyed in the tornado that hit suburban Oklahoma City.

Stoops told ESPN in an interview Tuesday that he doesn't know of any of Sooners players or their families who were hurt when the twister hit Moore on Monday.

Stoops' home is just south of Moore in the northern section of Norman, and he says his family saw the tornado through the back window of their home and was ready to go into their storm shelter. Stoops says he was at the football offices and watching on television.

The athletic department posted photos on Twitter on Tuesday of Stoops visiting with families displaced by the tornado who took shelter at the university.

network.yardbarker.com - When Johnathan Williams III signed with the University of Missouri on October 18, 2012, he became the second ESPN100 player in this season's freshman class, along with Wes Clark, and the third in the past five years; Phil Pressey was a ESPN100 player in the class of 2010. Williams III is a 6-8, 208 pound power forward from Southwind High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

Williams III is a lefty that is comparable to Lamar Odom. A long, face-up style four can shoot from range, as well as rebound and start the break. Williams III is that rare-combination of length and skill and has a great feel for the game. He brings high energy on both ends of the floor, and has the ability to create shots for himself.

One trait that Williams III will need work on is a more consistent three-point shot. He has the skills to play the perimeter but he will need to develop a post-up game when smaller defenders are matched up with him.
bleacherreport.com -
The end of the Rick Barnes era at Texas is in sight, and it’s a cruel reality.

Winning is how coaches are judged, and Barnes deserves a kind jury. He made the NCAA tournament in his first 14 seasons at Texas, a streak that ended in 2013. He has won. Consistently.

The perception of Barnes as a coach has not always lined up with the results. I’ve written about that before.

But the defense is about to rest. It might be a lost cause at this point.

Since the Longhorns finished their 16-18 season, they have had three players transfer and another, Myck Kabongo, declare for the NBA draft. That’s the program’s three leading scorers and a rotation big man. Gone.

Then athletic director DeLoss Dodds, always a supporter of Barnes, told the Austin American-Statesman this:

If I said I was not concerned, that would not be accurate. I am concerned. I am troubled by it, and we need to get it fixed.

Win, and win quickly. That’s the message of any AD who has to come out in the local paper in defense of his high-profile coach.

Well, that’s going to be an issue.

In the past, Barnes has been able to reload as quickly as a Texas gunslinger. Since 2006, Texas has had 11 players drafted in the NBA. Only Kentucky, North Carolina and Kansas have had more in that same time span. Nine of those players left school early. A 10th Longhorn, J’Covan Brown, left after his junior year in 2012 and went undrafted.

Talent leaves. Talent comes in. That’s how Barnes kept racking up the NCAA tourney bids.

But last season without Brown as a senior and after the NCAA decided to punish Kabongo with an unnecessary suspension that stretched into mid-February, the task was impossible. Barnes had the youngest team in college basketball—he played all freshmen and sophomores—and the only true NBA prospect was showing up to games in a suit.

Barnes had a laundry list of excuses he could give for only the second losing season in his career. Everyone should get a mulligan.

But next season will count, and it’s not looking promising.

The Barnes detractors can argue that he has lost his touch in recruiting. The Horns had opportunity to sell to the 2013 class, and what they came up with was a class whose top player is ranked 105th by Rivals.com.

The state of Texas produced 11 players in Rivals.com’s top 150. Barnes landed one of the 11.

Barnes has not always depended exclusively on local talent. He has had a national presence on the recruiting scene, but Kabongo is the only high-profile recruit from outside of the state he’s recruited in his last three classes.

Those classes were good enough to tread water until Barnes could land another big-time recruit or two. Had Sheldon McClellan, Julien Lewis, Jaylen Bond and Kabongo stuck around, Barnes would have had a roster that could have competed in the top half of the Big 12.

What’s left is a roster without stars or experience. Jonathan Holmes is the only player left from the 2011 class of six, and he’ll be the only upperclassman in the rotation next year.

Barnes’ PR campaign that has followed the departures—listen to the video below for a sample—is that the bad seeds are gone now. What’s left are guys who really care about the program. That’s nice and all, but what Barnes has won with is great talent.

When he arrived at Texas, Barnes coached a team of seven scholarship players to a Big 12 title in his first season. That kind of better-than-expected season in 2013-14 could buy him more time. Or, Barnes will have to dust off his recruiting game and score big with the 2014 class to give a fanbase that has turned apathetic something to be excited about.

The clock is ticking.

Read more Texas Longhorns Basketball news on BleacherReport.com

www.bringonthecats.com -

Typical. I had a whole big first round preview all ready, and the Big 12 went and made things difficult for me. The nerve.

Seriously, in the wake of the tornado in Moore yesterday, the Big 12 has postponed the conference championship for a day, and as a result has had to adjust the schedule in order to still get the thing finished by Sunday. What was originally to be a double-elimination tournament has now been changed to pool play, completely upending the original schedule of games.

Obviously, this was a tough call for the league; there's arguments for both delaying the championship -- sensitivity, infrastructure, civic resources -- and proceeding on schedule -- get on with business, give people something to take their mind off matters. They're all perfectly valid, but in a situation like the state of Oklahoma is facing right now, probably best to err on the side of caution.

There are numerous ways to provide your assistance to the Moore community. We at BotC extend our thoughts and prayers to those affected, and are heartened by the massive outpouring of support.

Stay tuned to this StoryStream for a full preview of the championship and an updated schedule.

Senior Day turned out to be a bummer for the Cats, as they went down to Oklahoma 7-2 and in the process failed to reach the 40-win mark in the regular season. Starting Thursday, however, they'll have the opportunity -- and hopefully several of them -- to pad the win total before the official selections for the 2013 NCAA Baseball Championship are announced. Running the table would push K-State's overall record to 43-16, which ain't too shabby.

Yesterday, the regular season officially closed with Utah's 7-6 win over Kansas. With that piece of business out of the way, it's time to take a look at the field now in preparation for Thursday's festivities. Note that all games prior to the championship on Sunday will air on Fox College Sports Central (although it may be on FSSW and/or FSMW, in which case FCSC may be blacked out on your system -- check and be sure), and games after the first game will be subject to delay in the event of extra innings or nasty weather.

Because of the tornado, the double-elimination format has been scrapped; the two bracket divisions (1-4-5-8, 2-3-6-7) will now each play a three-game round robin on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, with the pool winners facing off on Sunday for the championship. The opening games of those round-robins, however, remain the same as the originally scheduled opening-round games in the double elimination, so with that, on to the preview.

FIRST ROUND, THURSDAY, MAY 23
Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, Oklahoma City OK

GAME ONE
9am CT
#5 Baylor (27-25, 12-11, 5-5 last 10) vs #4 Oklahoma (36-19, 13-11, 3-7 last 10)

Both teams limp into the tournament. Oklahoma, who'd been bouncing in and out of the conference lead all season, wilted down the stretch, losing series to West Virginia, Oklahoma State, and the Wildcats in succession, as well as a pair of single games against Dallas Baptist. The Sooners are led by stud junior pitchers Jonathan Gray and Dillon Overton, who were both part of the five-way tie for the conference lead in wins with matching 8-2 records, but they've both proven not to be invulnerable in May. Still, Gray has been striking out hitters at a prodigious rate, running away with the league lead by notching 115 Ks on the season in only 14 starts, and opposing hitters have only touched the Howser nominee for a .188 batting average. That's 10.25 per nine innings. Junior 1B Matt Oberste paces the Sooner offense, piling up a .389/.466/.659 line with 10 HR and a league-leading 51 RBI and 81 hits. Senior SS Jack Mayfield added 7 HR and finished second in the conference in runs scored with 47.

Baylor also stumbled late, though not as badly as the Sooners. They swept last-place (and staying home for the tournament) Texas and picked up a win at Texas-Arlington, but then suffered a painful sweep in Lawrence. The Bears rebounded with a home win over UTSA before dropping two of three in Lubbock. Senior OF Nathan Orf was third in the league in hitting at .380, but doesn't possess any power to speak of. Senior 3B Cal Towey supplies the punch, finishing tied for fourth in the conference with 43 RBI. Baylor's #1 starter is senior Max Garner, sixth in the loop with 63 strikeouts.

If Oklahoma righted themselves mentally in the season finale win, they should handle business here, but Baylor did take two of three in Waco in April. Still, this is a de facto home game for the Sooners, which will be a boost, and they'll be playing with some emotion; that could help or hinder them, of course.

GAME TWO
12:30pm CT
#8 Texas Tech (25-28, 9-15, 6-4 last 10) vs #1 Kansas State (39-16, 16-8, 8-2 last 10)

Not only are the BatCats 8-2 in their last 10, they're 12-3 in the last 15. They're on a roll, and TCU's the only team to even keep the offense in check since the end of March. That's because the Wildcats, of course, led the conference in hitting; individually, the BatCats took up five spots in the top ten in batting average -- five in a row, in fact, taking fourth-eighth place on the list. Junior 2B Ross Kivett posted a .359/.434/.462 line with 12 doubles and 30 RBI, was second in the Big 12 in hits with 80, 3rd in runs scored with 46, and was second in stolen bases with 26. Sophomore SS Austin Fisher hit .358/.431/.516 with 18 doubles and 34 RBI; junior CF Jared King, last year's batting champ, racked up a .342/.430/.532 line with 6 HR and 46 RBI. Sophomore 1B Shane Conlon adds .340/.434/.517, 7 HR, 27 RBI, and led the league in runs scored with 49, and junior 3B R.J. Santigate hit .339/.414/.381. Besides those five, senior Tanner Witt was tied for fourth in the conference (with Conlon) with 71 hits while senior Jon Davis was fourth in OBP at .443. In short, the BatCats can, you know, Bat. The WIldcats' weakness, as it were, is with the starting rotation; the team as a whole was 7th in the league in ERA, and not a single starter appears among the conference leaders in anything but games started. The Cats do have a bullpen, however; Witt, doing double duty, saved 7 games while ace closer Jake Matthys was 8-0 on the season with 6 saves in 28 appearances.

Tech is playing okay coming in, having just taken the season-ending series from Baylor and recording recent non-conference wins at home over Dallas Baptist and New Mexico. They dropped series against Oklahoma State and Oklahoma just before that, though, along with a loss at Arizona State. Statistically, Tech's at the bottom end of the league; seventh in hitting at .262 with little power, and dead last in ERA at a frightening 4.88. That's despite junior Trey Masek, who went 5-1 with a 1.52 ERA in 10 starts. Outside of freshman OF Eric Gutierrez (6 HR), junior SS Jake Barrios (second in the Big 12 with 48 RBI), and sophomore CF Brett Bell (the league stolen base champ with 31), Tech has very little in the way of offensive weaponry.

Ultimately, the Cats easily swept the Red Raiders in Manhattan back in April, outscoring them 33-9. Tech's porous pitching staff simply doesn't match up with K-State's crazy offense, and it's not a homeriffic sentiment to expect the Cats to win Thursday with no trouble.

GAME THREE
4:00pm CT
#6 Kansas (31-23, 12-12, 4-6 last 10) vs #3 West Virginia (31-25, 13-11, 4-6 last 10)

The Jayhawks appear to be in deep, deep trouble. They came into the stretch with a sweep over Baylor and a win at Wichita State, but then got swept by the Wildcats at home then went to Utah and got swept again. They're quite literally the only team in the conference riding a losing streak of any length heading into the championship; any kind of streak at all, actually, as other than Kansas everyone who won their finale Sunday lost on Saturday. The Jayhawks are led by senior 1B Alex DeLeon (third in the conference with 9 HR, t-fourth with 43 RBI) and junior closer Jordan Piche', who led the Big 12 with ten saves.

West Virginia's not on a roll themselves. They took two of three from the Sooners, but then lost a series to TCU and a single game to Marshall, all seven games in West Virginia (though none actually in Morgantown). Then they finished the season in Stillwater, losing the series to the Pokes. The Mountaineers' leading hitters are junior 3B Ryan Tuntland (.330/.420/.436), junior 1B Ryan McBroom, who knocked in 43 runs while leading the conference in homers with 11, and junior DH Matt Frazer, who added another seven round-trippers and 37 RBI. Like Texas Tech, West Virginia's main problem is pitching; the staff ERA was only 3.96 although sophomore Harrison Musgrave (who was just named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year this morning) posted a 2.14 era and an 8-1 record in 13 starts while leading the league in shutouts with three and allowing only a .197 opponent batting average. In other words, when he starts, good things will probably happen; when he doesn't, watch out. Another achilles heel for the 'Eers is their fielding; they were last in the Big 12 in both fielding percentage (I know, it's a stupid stat) and double plays turned (which isn't). And as dumb as fielding percentage might be, you can't ignore 84 errors; the next-worst team in the league was Baylor and they only committed 67.

This matchup could really go either way. Kansas was fighting for the league title not that long ago. If the Mountaineers had closed well, it would be a different story, but despite being a 3/6 game this is really a meeting of near-equals -- unless Musgrave throws game one, in which case West Virginia will likely win, but then what?

Notably also, if you haven't been paying attention, West Virginia's entire team -- who remained in Oklahoma after the series in Stillwater rather than going home and coming right back two days later -- went out last night to purchase goods to help the people affected by the Moore tornado. This is relevant when everyone converges on Bricktown because instead of having two effective home teams at Bricktown, we'll have three; the Oklahoma City crowd is going to be very, very well-disposed toward the league's easternmost member. That's not a complaint; the Mountaineers' actions are absolutely laudable, and as far as we're concerned seal their status as a member of the Big 12 family. Good show, newbies.

GAME FOUR
7:30pm CT
#7 Texas Christian (28-26, 12-12, 7-3 last 10) vs #2 Oklahoma State (39-14, 13-10, 7-3 last 10)

Don't sleep on the Frogs just yet. A miserable -- by TCU standards -- season ended well, with series wins at Southern Cal and West Virginia before a home win over Texas-Arlington and series win over the Longhorns. Indeed, TCU is 17-10 since the start of April, fighting back to erase a truly abysmal start to the season. If any team's poised to walk away with a surprise championship this week, it's the Amphibians. The biggest problem TCU faces is that they essentially have no offense. They were last in the league in hitting at .247/.336/.318, and that's not a typo. TCU slugs six points worse than K-State hits. The only Horned Frogs to even appear among the league leaders in any hitting category are sophomore OF Cody Jones, sixth in the conference with 43 runs scored, and senior 3B Jantzen Witte, who tied for fifth with 31... walks. Yeah. They make up for it on the hill, posting an ERA of 2.73, but in the Big 12 that's largely irrelevant: Texas led the league, and they're watching this tournament on FCS just like most of us will be. Sophomore Preston Morrison led the Big 12 in ERA with a 1.22 mark, but only had a 7-3 record because "run support". Sophomore Brandon Finnegan was second in the loop with 86 strikeouts (9.97/9 IP).

Oklahoma State's also been playing well, taking series wins at Texas Tech, at neutralish sites over OU, and at home over West Virginia, plus a win at Wichita State. And they'd won five in a row before that 10-game closing stretch, so they're just as hot as the Wildcats. The Cowboys were second in the league in hitting at .289/.380/.412, but even that batting average was 35 points behind the WIldcats' insane output. Junior OF Tanner Krietemeier, a Nebraska transfer, was tenth in the league with a .329/.412/.469 mark, adding 4 HR and 41 RBI. Senior SS Randy McCurry, who also sees some action on the hill, led the circuit with 20 doubles. On the mound, we finally meet the Big 12's fifth eight-game winner in junior starter Vince Wheeland, who went 8-1 and was sixth in the league in ERA at 1.79. Workhorse sophomore Jason Hursh logged 97 innings and struckout 79 (7.33/9 IP), while Randy's brother Brendan McCurry, a junior, notched eight saves.

Either team could win this one, but the safe bet is to expect the Cowboys to dispatch our purple brothers. The Frogs hot streak is nice, but OSU has played well all season outside of a slow start to the conference slate -- remove their .500 start in Big 12 play, and they've been 32-7 otherwise. You can't ignore that, and you can't ignore the fact that the teams match up poorly, at least for the Frogs. Yes, TCU can pitch, but OSU can hit. The Cowboys, on the other hand, can also pitch a little, which sort of spells doom for a team which won way too many games 2-1.

There you have it. Join us Thursday for open thread goodness kicking off at 9am; until then, if you can help the people of Moore in any way, please do. After three devastating twisters in 14 years hitting the same city, they can use all the help we can give them.

Due to the horrific natural disaster in Moore, Oklahoma, the Big 12 has postponed its baseball tournament by a day and altered the format to better accomodate the response to the tornado that slammed the region earlier this week. Oklahoma City, which neighbors Moore, will still host the event which is now scheduled to begin on Thursday.

To accomodate the change, the league has changed the tournament from its previous double-elimination format. Teams will still be divided into two pools, with the team managing the top record in each pool moving on to the championship game on Sunday. K-State’s new schedule:

vs. #8 seed Texas Tech on Thursday (the Wildcats took the season series against Tech 3-0)

vs. #5 seed Baylor on Friday (the Wildcats lost two of three games to Baylor, including a 13 inning, 10-8 loss)

vs. #4 seed Oklahoma on Saturday (the Wildcats took two of three games against Oklahoma to secure the Big 12 championship last weekend)

In pool two are #2 Oklahoma State, #3 West Virginia, #6 Kansas, and #7 TCU. Each game will be played at 12:30, with championship set to start at 1 p.m. on Sunday. All games will be played at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City. The Wildcats are coming off their first Big 12 baseball championship and first conference baseball title of any sort since 1933.

Seems about right, yet it seems totally wrong the Oklahoma women's basketball season would end the same way it started.

"Really? Serioulsy? After everything, now we're going to drop one in the Sweet 16," OU coach Sherri Coale said.

That's the way it went for the Sooners this year, overwhelmed by injuries and then overwhelmed by Tennessee Sunday afternoon, 74-59 inside Oklahoma City's Chesapeake Arena.

Yet in between the four season-ending injuries that pared the Oklahoma roster down so significantly Coale was forced to bring on a pair of volleyball players to fill out the team all the way up to Sunday's loss, the Sooners went on to win 24 games, including two in the tournament that sent Oklahoma back to the Sweet 16 for the sixth time in the past eight seasons.

Join Bring on the Cats for coverage of the 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship.

Senior Day turned out to be a bummer for the Cats, as they went down to Oklahoma 7-2 and in the process failed to reach the 40-win mark in the regular season. Starting tomorrow, however, they'll have the opportunity -- and hopefully several of them -- to pad the win total before the official selections for the 2013 NCAA Baseball Championship are announced. Running the table would push K-State's overall record to 43-16, which ain't too shabby.

Yesterday, the regular season officially closed with Utah's 7-6 win over Kansas. With that piece of business out of the way, it's time to take a look at the field now in preparation for tomorrow's festivities. Note that all games prior to the championship on Sunday will air on Fox College Sports Central, and games after the first game will be subject to delay in the event of extra innings or nasty weather.

Like Texas Tech, West Virginia's main problem is pitching; the staff ERA was only 3.96 although sophomore Harrison Musgrave posted a 2.14 era and an 8-1 record in 13 starts while leading the league in shutouts with three and allowing only a .197 opponent batting average.

If the Mountaineers had closed well, it would be a different story, but despite being a 3/6 game this is really a meeting of near-equals -- unless Musgrave throws game one, in which case West Virginia will likely advance, but then what?

Notably also, if you haven't been paying attention, West Virginia's entire team -- who remained in Oklahoma after the series in Stillwater rather than going home and coming right back two days later -- went out last night to purchase goods to help the people affected by the Moore tornado. This is relevant on Wednesday because instead of having two effective home teams at Bricktown, we'll have three; the Oklahoma City crowd is going to be very, very well-disposed toward the league's easternmost member.

Either team could win this one, but the safe bet is to expect the Cowboys to advance.
